How is Pilates different from other fitness programs?
The focus of Pilates training is on improving how the body moves and functions as compared to working individual muscles.
Instead of increasing the amount of resistance or repetitions as the body adapts, Pilates improves fitness by adding new exercises that require greater use of multiple muscle groups while further challenging stability, improving core strength, balance and coordination. Emphasis is on working the body as a whole vs. isolating individual muscle groups. Pilates balances strength with flexibility for a leaner and well toned physique. The result is a body that that has better posture and alignment with less aches and pains and is less prone to injury.
Will Pilates help back, knee, or shoulder pain?
The emphasis on restoring proper postural alignment helps reduce pain associated with chronic musculoskeletal conditions. Pilates exercises are used for rehabilitation and post rehabilitation. Always check with your physician first. Make sure your Pilates trainer has specific training in working with post rehabilitation patients.
How is Pilates different from Yoga?
Many Pilates exercises were derived from Yoga. Both are great mind body disciplines. The breathing systems are different. The emphasis in Pilates is on core stabilization. Yoga involves holding postures while Pilates involves movement. Pilates exercises are done on a mat or on specialized equipment.
What is the difference between mat Pilates and equipment?
Both use the same fundamentals. In mat, the exercises are done using the body weight as resistance and the exercises are progressed to challenge stability. In Pilates equipment training, springs are used for resistance. The equipment is great for all ages and abilities, for those that need to modify the exercises due to previous injuries or chronic conditions to those that want a more challenging athletic workout to everyone in between.
